   SIP End User Agents

End user devices are communication adapters such as telephones, fax machines, or private telephone systems that adapt signals from a telecommunication system to a format (such as audio or visual) to a form that is suitable for an end user.

End user devices in a SIP system are called user agents (UA). The UA is a conversion device that adapts signals from a data network into a format that is suitable for users. Examples of user agents include dedicated IP telephones (hardphones), Analog Telephone Adapters (ATAs), or software (softphones) that operate on a computer that has multimedia (audio) capabilities.

SIP user agents may perform as service request devices (clients) or may respond to requests from the SIP network to delivery calls (server). When the User Agent operates as a requestor of service, it is called a user agent client (UAC) and when it is responding to requests for service, it is called a user agent server (UAS).

This figure shows how a SIP system uses relatively simple text messages to setup and control telephone calls. This diagram shows a user agent (UA) SIP telephone that is controlled by a call server. The user agent (UA) telephone is actually a gateway that converts audio and control information into packets. The control packets are sent to and from the server to request and receive calls. Servers may communicate with other servers to setup distant call connections. This diagram shows how a distant server controls a user agent (UA) gateway that allows calls to connect from the Internet to a public telephone.
